Each year the Miami Herald ranks each of the senior high schools in Miami-Dade County based on the overall record of each of the sports offered at each school. Each sport is designated as major sport or a minor sport. Point values are then assigned to each sport with Football the highest followed by the major sports and finally the minor sports with the fewest. The major sports are; Football, Girls Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, and Track & Field. The minor sports are; Bowling, Cross Country, Swimming, Badminton, Golf, Tennis, Boys Volleyball, and Water Polo. In 1980 the major sports were further divided between Girls Major Sports and Boys Major Sports. Each year three school awards are presented; All Sports, Girls Major Sports, and Boys Major Sports. In addition, a top female athlete and a top male athlete are recognized each year. A player of the year is also recognized in each sport.
